BIOGRAPHY
Obama went to Occidental College in Los Angeles for college. He studied here for the first two years before transfering to Columbia University in New York City. He specialized in political science. Obama read a lot while he was at university.
After college. Obama started working for a business consulting firm. One year after working with this firm, he started working with the poor people in Chicago. These were mainly black people. Obama had always tried to understand the problems black people had faced and the social injustice they faced every day.
He set up a community development project and worked alongside the church. He also worked with the people of Chicago push the city officials to improve their living conditions. The residents here lived in public housing that was poorly maintained. He had a little success but he felt that to make more impact, he needed to represent these people better. He felt that if he studied law, he would be in a better position to defend these people.
Barack Obama enrolled to Harvard University in 1988. He excelled both in class and out of class. He was the first black person to be elected as the president of Harvard Law Review. He occupied this position from 1990 to 1991. While seeking the position, he promised that he would treat everyone’s views fairly.
Being the first African American to be elected President of the Harvard Law Review gave Obama a lot of attention and he appeared in major newspapers. A publisher approached Obama asking him to write a book about his life and this is where the idea of his first book, Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance started. It was produced in 1995 and was a bestseller. In the book, he writes about his father’s journey as a black man to his own journey as a black man raised in different cultures.
Barack Obama started working in a civil rights law firm in 1992. He was also a part time lecturer in the University of Chicago. Barack Obama first ran for public office in 1996 for the position of the District State Senator. He won his opponent and became the District State Senator.
In 2000, he ran for Congress but he lost since he was not as popular as his opponent.
He went back to the state senate and became the senator of Illinois in 2002. Barack Obama was opposed many things like the war in Iraq and he started getting attention.
President of the United States of America
In 2008, he ran for President under the Democratic Party. He went further to win the election. He became the first African American President and the 44th President of the United States of America.
