The law describing the Washington State Flag was passed by
the legislature in 1923. Prior to the official law, a blue and gold military flag was
flown by many cities and towns throughout the state of Washington. George Washington's
profile was depicted on this state flag. When the law was passed in 1923, the Washington
state flag was described "...of dark green silk or bunting and shall bear in its center
a reproduction of the seal of the state of Washington..."
